Rajnath Singh Replaces Narendra Modi as BJP Campaign Committee Chief

BJP president Rajnath Singh on Sunday replaced Narendra Modi as the chief of the campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls following elevation of the Gujarat chief minister as prime ministerial candidate.

The decision was taken by the party's parliamentary board which met in the capital on Sunday.

Mr Modi relinquished the position and proposed Rajnath Singh's name.

Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Ananth Kumar later told reporters that Rajnath Singh's name was accepted unanimously by all the parliamentary board members.

Party sources said that the decision was expected as Mr Modi could not have run his own campaign.

They said that the sub-committees under the campaign committee were headed by senior leaders and it was expected that Rajnath Singh will be appointed to head the panel.

Mr Modi was declared prime ministerial candidate after protracted discussions in the party on September 13. BJP patriarch LK Advani had not attended the parliamentary board meeting that decided his elevation.

The Gujarat chief minister was declared chief of party's campaign committee for 2014 Lok Sabha polls in June this year.

BJP to Contest 450 Lok Sabha Seats in 2014: Rajnath Singh

Chennai: BJP president Rajnath Singh Friday said his party plans to contest around 450 Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 General Elections and targets to win around 272 -- so as to form the next central government on its own.

On the Supreme Court verdict calling for negative voting by electronic voting machines (EVMs) and ballot papers, Rajnath Singh urged the poll panel to call an all-party meeting to discuss its implications.

"We may contest in 450 seats and target to win 272 of them," he told reporters here.

Asked about the additional 100 seats the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest, given it is perceived as being strong only in the Hindi heartland and in some other areas that have around 300-350 Lok Sabha constituencies, he said: "We will also be contesting in the south. We are growing in south."

The BJP chief said poll alliances with potential parties are part of the BJP's strategy and announcements on these would be made at appropriate time. Alliance talks are not being held in Tamil Nadu with the parties now, he said.

On Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's comment that the ordinance that seeks to save convicted lawmakers from disqualification was "completely nonsense and should be torn up", Rajnath Singh said he would like to ask Gandhi for his opinion about the UPA government.

On the apex court's judgment on allowing people to cast a "negative vote", he said: "We will study the judgment. The BJP will come out with a statement."

"Meanwhile, the Election Commission should take cognizance of the judgment and call an all-party meeting for discussion" on its implications, he said.

Referring to the killing of auditor V Ramesh, the BJP's state leader in Tamil Nadu, Rajnath Singh hoped Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa will take interest in the case and ensure the culprits are brought to book.

Police are yet to identify the killers, he added.

Narendra Modi Confidante Amit Shah to Visit Bihar on 21-September

BJP General Secretary Amit Shah, a confidante of party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, is arriving here on Saturday to draw up the political strategy in the state after the party's break up with JD(U) and also to review preparations for the October 27 rally to be addressed by Modi.

Shah is coming here on September 21 to take part in 100th birth anniversary of former Bihar Chief Minister Bhola Paswan Shastri, BJP SC Morcha president Sanjay Paswan told reporters here on Thursday.

Along with Shah, state BJP leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, will attend the anniversary function at S K Memorial hall here, Paswan, a former Union minister of state and who is chairman of the programme, said.

Paswan also said that during his visit Shah would draw up thefuture political strategy for 2014 elections.

He said Shah, BJP General Secretary and a former minister in Narendra Modi government in Gujarat, would also review the preparation for October 27 "Hunkar (roar) rally" at Gandhi Maidan, which will be addressed by Narendra Modi.

It will be the first occasion when Narendra Modi would address a rally in his rival Nitish Kumar's home turf. He is expected to take on Kumar for snapping ties with BJP over his elevation.

Due to Kumar's discomfort, Narendra Modi was kept away from Bihar by BJP both in last general elections as well state assembly polls in 2010.

Narendra Modi to Resign as BJP Election Campaign Chief: Reports

New Delhi, Sept 17: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani might have received some good news on Narendra Modi's 64th birthday on Tuesday, Sept 17. According to media reports, the Gujarat Chief Minister, who recently has been elevated as party's PM candidate, may resign as BJP election campaign chief.

The reports claimed that the party would appoint someone new who would replace Modi as the campaign head of the Lok Sabha election which is expected to be held in 2014.

However, Modi will not resign as Gujarat CM, confirmed BJP President Rajnath Singh and ideological mentor of BJP -- Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leaders. According to Singh, Modi would not leave Gujarat and no one will be appointed as deputy CM of Gujarat as well.

Earlier addressing a group of young student in Gujarat, Modi had promised that he would not leave his responsibilities for Gujarat if he would be given any bigger role in national politics. Modi won assembly elections for fourth consecutive times in Gujarat.

Despite Advani's reservation on the announcement on Modi, the Gujarat CM has been named the prime ministerial candidate of BJP. Advani earlier had resigned from crucial posts in NDA following Modi's previous elevation as election campaign chief. However, the veteran later had withdrawn his resignation being convinced by RSS.

Narendra Modi-for-PM Announcement Likely Within 24-Hours

The BJP is likely to announce tomorrow that Narendra Modi will be its candidate for prime minister, according to sources, despite taut opposition from LK Advani, the party's senior-most leader.

"Nobody is angry or protesting", said BJP president Rajnath Singh, adding that Mr Modi's political future will be decided "after talks."

He met with Mr Advani this morning, after a round of negotiations yesterday cancelled any hope of consensus. At that session, sources say, Mr Advani predicted a "political disaster" if the BJP outs Mr Modi as its presumptive prime minister, continuing a strident but largely ineffectual campaign against the man who he once mentored.

The BJP's ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh or RSS, believes that Mr Modi's surging popularity among party workers could extend to voters, and wants Mr Modi's candidature to be announced urgently.

The conundrum for Mr Singh as president is whether to proceed now with a meeting of the BJP's top 12 leaders or parliamentary board for a vote on Mr Modi.

Mr Advani, 85, has allegedly said he will vote against the Gujarat Chief Minister; Murli Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj could echo his dissent, said sources, laying bare the fissures that Mr Modi has pounded within the BJP.

Mr Advani's first major act of rebellion against the ascension of Mr Modi played out in June, when he resigned from all party posts after the chief minister was picked campaign-in-charge. An intervention by the RSS persuaded Mr Advani to return to the fold.

Mr Advani claims that a campaign pivoted around Mr Modi will force the BJP to focus its campaign on defending the chief minister, who is regularly excoriated by other parties for being a divisive leader on account of the riots in his state in 2002, in which hundreds of Muslims were killed.

Mulayam Singh Yadav Rules Out Pre-Poll Alliance for 2014

Agra: In the midst of a crisis over Akhilesh Yadav government's alleged mishandling of Muzaffarnagar riots that has killed 48 people, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday addressed the top party functionaries and ruled out any pre-poll alliance for 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

According to reports, the SP chief said, "The countdown of the Congress-led UPA government has begun. There will be no pre-poll alliance with any party for the 2014 polls."

Mulayam Singh Yadav made these remarks while addressing the national executive meeting of the party, which is being attended by all top SP leaders.

Speaking on his turn, SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav also endorsed Mulayam's view that the party will not forge any pre-poll alliance with any party for the 2014 polls.

Speaking on the issue of Azam Khan's absence in the national executive meet, Ram Gopal Yadav said, "He can have some important work."

"Isn't he seen at all important events with the CM," he questioned, while assuring that the state government is working towards restoring peace in the region.

Ram Gopal also stated that the violence in Muzaffarnagar "was a fight between two communities and not a communal riot."

The reactions from the SP chief and his brother came shortly after it was reported that Azam Khan, a prominent Muslim face of the Samajwadi Party and a powerful politician from Uttar Pradesh, had skipped the national executive meeting of the party in Agra.

Khan is said to reportedly upset over the state government's handling of the last week's riots in Muzaffarnagar that claimed 48 lives.

The absence of Uttar Pradesh Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan also signifies a growing rift within the party over the government's handling of the issue.

The top SP leadership is meeting today in the Taj city to deliberate on its strategy in the run-up for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Never See Dreams of Being PM; have to Serve Gujarat till 2017: Narendra Modi

Downplaying his Prime Ministerial aspirations, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said he never dreams of holding the top post as he is bound to respect the mandate given to him by the people of his state till 2017.

"Those who dream of becoming something end up destroying themselves. One should not dream of becoming something, but one should dream of doing something," Modi said when a student asked him whether he will come and interact with them in 2014 after 'he will become the Prime Minister'.

"I never see such dreams (of becoming PM), nor am I going to see such dreams. People of Gujarat have given me a mandate to serve them till 2017 and I have to do this with my full strength," Modi said.

The BJP strongman, who is in the race for the party's PM candidate, was replying to questions asked by students who had gathered at a function for felicitating best teachers of the state on the occasion of Teacher's Day.

Modi shared the dais with State Governor Kamla Beniwal at the function for the first time after fresh confrontation between them. Beniwal has returned the controversial Gujarat Lokayukta Aayog bill for reconsideration to the government with stinging remarks.

Modi's comments come at a time when Opposition Congress is gunning for his resignation and has given a call for Gujarat bandh tomorrow after the explosive resignation letter of suspended IPS officer D G Vanzara and emergence of a sting operation CD involving two BJP MPs allegedly trying to derail the investigation in the Tusli Prajapati encounter case.
