I-Pac Popularity Survey 2018: PM Modi 400% ahead than Rahul Gandhi in Online Poll

I-PAC leader popularity survey: For 2019, 48% chose Narendra Modi to take forward 'national agenda', 11% opt for Rahul Gandhi

In a survey conducted by The Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), 48% of over 57 lakh people from 712 districts reached out to in 55 days see Narendra Modi as the leader to take forward the 'agenda of the nation'.

The survey done by an advocacy group - mentored by political strategist Prashant Kishor - under National Agenda Forum (NAF) has nominated 923 leaders for the respondents to choose from.

Rahul Gandhi follows Modi with 11% votes whereas Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has claimed the third spot with 9.3% votes Meanwhile, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav with 7 % votes in the fourth spot followed by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati with 4.2% and 3.1% votes, respectively.

The survey states that the respondents cited women's empowerment, farm crisis, economic inequality, problems of students, education in health and hygiene, sanitation, communal unity and basic education among the top priority issues for the country.

The survey also lists 10 non-political personalities nominated by the people to join politics. Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Anna Hazare top this list.

I-PAC launched the NAF in July to mobilise about one crore citizens to formulate an actionable agenda for citizens to choose their leaders online in the 2019 elections, an official said on Sunday.

The I-PAC official told IANS that the NAF was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary year. The NAF is formed to resurrect the conversation around Gandhi's 18-point Constructive Programme for independent India and use it to reimagine and co-create India's priorities to formulate an actionable agenda for the present.

The youth volunteers of the organisation would now meet the chosen leader in September or October. The agenda would then be taken to the entire nation, before it is adopted as part of the party manifesto in January 2019 for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

BJP pushes for Elections in 11 States to Coincide with Lok Sabha Polls

While most of the states due to go into elections in 2018 and 2019 are currently under BJP, rival parties like Congress have already said they are against the idea of clubbing state elections with Lok Sabha polls.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is pushing for elections in 11 states to take place along with Lok Sabha elections scheduled to be held in 2019. These states include Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Mizoram and Bihar.

BJP believes that if state governments and political parties are fine with the prospect of having elections to coincide with Lok Sabha polls, it could be done without bringing about any change in the Constitution.

This could be possible because elections in AP, Odisha and Telangana are likely to match the dates of Lok Sabha elections. Polls in Rajasthan, MP and Chattisgarh - the tenure of the BJP governments here expires in January of 2019 - can be pushed back while election dates in Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand (all BJP-ruled states) and Mizoram (Congress government's tenure here expires in December) can be pushed forward to ensure all of these match Lok Sabha election dates.

Elections in Bihar are due towards the end of 2020 and there is murmur that preponing the elections here could suit Nitish Kumar's JD(U) as well.

The prospect of having Governor's rule to serve the objective of common poll dates though has many questioning the legal validity of such a move.

While BJP President Amit Shah wrote to Law Commission on Monday and expressed that his party is in favour of common polling dates, opposition parties like Congress and Trinamool Congress are vehemently against the idea. This means bringing about a Constitutional Amendment could prove to be an uphill task.

Know - What ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala predicted about Modi Govt. and 2019 Lok Sabha Election

Ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is confident about a Modi victory in 2019 elections. He is betting on these two Tata firms in the coming years.

Even as market pundits try to decode the reaction of Sensex and Nifty to political uncertainties, ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is confident on PM Modi winning the 2019 elections. In an interview to ET Now, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala said that the stock markets are currently bearish about the BJP’s prospects.

“I personally feel we are far more bearish about the BJP prospects than the actual reality…I would want that Mr Modi comes back. This election is going to be fought on personalities. I can write and give you one thing, BJP will form government, with most likely Mr Modi at the helm,” he told the channel.

Decoding the reaction of stocks markets during the past elections, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala noted that when the BJP lost during India shining, the Sensex was at 6,500, and it was 25,000 within that 4 years. “When later the Congress won by 209 seats, the Nifty went up by 40% in 2 days, and after that it never went down. India is greater than individuals,” he pointed out.

In the same interview, the big bull of Dalal Street said that the Tsunami of inflows into the stock markets, especially through mutual funds will continue. “Look at the way the savings will grow. If India has to be a $10 trillion economy by 2030, savings will be $3 trillion a year. Even if 10% of that comes to the stock market, the share market will be at $300 billion. I want to point out that 32% of household wealth in US is now equity,” he said.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala then shared his love for the Tata Enterprise and exuded confidence in N Chandrasekaran’s abilities to take the behemoth to greater heights. “Those who built the Tata Enterprise, Sir Ratan Tata, and Sir Jamsetji Tata, they willed their wealth to charity. They have a very big cancer hospital in Bombay, and every child is examined by them. If they feel they can cure it, they provide free treatment.

The first steel plant, first 5-star hotel and first software company, first power plant, first car manufacturing plant, the Indian Institute of Sciences. Tata enterprise is a role model of what is wealth. They are creating wealth for the good of society. What nobler aim can a human have?” he said.

So where exactly is he seeing value creation in the Tata Enterprise. “In the next 5-10 years Tata Steel and Tata Communication can do well,” he said. According to the investment maestro, 18-24% in the stock market is reasonable returns. “It’s not that I’m a great and well known investor so I make 30%, it doesn’t work that way,” he said.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala also advised investors to buy jewellery to tide through difficult times. “It’s very important to buy jewellery. Our ancestors have told to put 3-4% and I don’t even have a quarter percent. I know of many friends who have gotten past 5 years by selling jewellery,” he said.

Amit Shah asks BJP Cadres to Prepare for Solo 2019 Elections Fight in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will go solo in Maharastra for the 2019 polls, said party president Amit Shah on Sunday.

Shah's direction comes three days after BJP ally Shiv Sena boycotted the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha on Friday asking for more accountability from the Centre.

Shah held closed-door assessment meeting of senior party leaders here with the focus on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and strengthening the cadre in Maharashtra.

Ahead of the crucial floor test, the party held a meeting where the decision to boycott the house proceeding was taken. Later, Sena lauded Congress president Rahul Gandhi in its mouthpiece Saamana over the latter’s speech during no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha.

Asking party cadres to prepare for the elections alone, Shah laid down a 23-point working strategy and discussed issues such as increasing the party strength, addressing new voters' groups based on their profession, gender, likings etc and a regular follow up of the voters by the local party workers.

The party will soon declare the names of candidates for all 48 seats in Maharashtra, he added.

In 2014, of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, BJP had won 23 seats, the Shiv Sena 18, the NCP four, the Congress two, and former BJP ally Swabhimani Paksh one.

The BJP leader also singer Lata Mangeshkar at her home in south Mumbai as part of the party's "contact for support" campaign.

Apart from meeting the 'Vistaraks' of the party whose mandate is to increase the network of the BJP in different geographies, Shah also interacted with the members of the 'Lok Sabha Toli', a group that consists of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state unit chief Raosaheb Danve, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, ministers Sudhir Mungantiwar, Chandrakant Patil and Pankaja Munde, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, among others.

Modi in West Midnapore on 16-July: How BJP is Raising Poll Heat ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Elections

It’s just been a fortnight and Bengal has become a must stop for two BJP stalwarts — Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.

In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is eyeing 22 seats, out of which they are right now focussed on three seats from the tribal districts of Jhargram, Purulia, West Midnapore and Bankura. These areas have given the party unexpected success in the Panchayat polls.

A neck-and-neck fight in Purulia and Jhargram, despite allegations of electoral malpractices, threat and intimidation by the ruling party, has convinced the BJP leaders that political winds are shifting in the tribal belt. Grievances are growing and now is the time to reap the dividends.

Modi has chosen the tribal-dominated district of West Midnapore as the venue for kicking off his campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Bengal. This would also be the place to roll his pro-farmer campaign, the increase in MSP on rice and over a dozen agricultural produce.

On June 28, when Amit Shah was in Purulia, he addressed the rally in the capacity of the party national president, attacking the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s governance. Modi is purely going to raise his decibels in favour of the central schemes his government has initiated and ask if the benefits had reached them or not.

Once informed that the tribal community is dissatisfied with the irregularity of state doles, delayed payment and above all, politicisation of distribution of benefits, the Prime Minister is going to uphold the transparent dealings of the central schemes where credits are directly linked to the beneficiary’s bank accounts.

There will be more arrows in his quiver.

The BJP has lined up a series of heavyweight leaders to campaign in Bengal. Modi himself will tour some of the districts where the party expects to be lucky.

After all, the slogan of this election is Ebar Bangla (now Bengal).

The ruling Trinamool Congress is a bit worried as it is likely to face a tough opposition in BJP, now that the Left and Congress have become non-players in Bengal and the anti-incumbency votes are unlikely to be divided, at least in these tribal areas where the masses are not known to try out many parties.

If there is a player/contestant from the tribal party or if the tribals pitch independent candidates, the contest is always two-pronged: between the incumbent or power-in-place and the tribals. But if the tribals feel they are inadequate in strength, they usually back the Opposition, which has the maximum chance of fulfilling their aspirations.

Right now, the BJP appears to be the only alternative close at hand and given RSS’s penetration in the tribal villages, even the ruling Trinamool Congress is in a difficult spot. The ruling party, however, is not sitting idle. It is mobilising all its strength to repair the weaknesses before going to the polls.

The Panchayat verdict has been an eye-opener and the chief minister, who usually prefers being oblivious to the faults and frailties of her party, has for once, realised that wisdom lies in acknowledging the problems and looking for a solution.

The first thing she did was to remove the people’s representatives, who were functioning as ministers and MLAs, and had grown too big for their boots. The locals were dissatisfied with them. Power had made them inaccessible and ostensibly rich.

While the humble abodes of people’s representatives became palaces and cycles were given up for SUVs, the tribal community was toiling to get four square meals. Even access to the subsidised ration, the wages of NREGA and other social welfare benefits depended on how close the tribals were to the political dadas.

Realising that there is hardly any time before the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened an emergency meeting with the tribals at the state headquarters last week.

The tribals were driven in the city in AC volvo buses, were looked after well and made to pour out their hearts, especially their angst, disillusionment and grievances.

Incidentally, the former tribal welfare affairs minister lost his portfolio after the BJP won 42 per cent seats in Jhargram and 33 per cent seats in Purulia.

Mamata formed a committee comprising all the tribal heads at the grassroots level. There was no people’s representative, except for Ritabrata Banerjee, who has been appointed the convener of the committee. Ritabrata has been expelled from the CPM for his allegedly wayward and un-communist ways and lavish lifestyle.

How Ritabrata is going to fit into the scheme of things by being the eyes, ear and voice of the tribals is now a big question.

PM Modi to Address 50 Rallies across India by February 2019

New Delhi: With an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address 50 rallies across the country by February next year, covering more than 100 Lok Sabha constituencies, sources said on Thursday.

This is in stark contrast to the 437 big rallies he addressed in the run up to the 2014 general election, according to NDTV. The report quoted BJP chief Amit Shah as saying that that Modi participated in 5,827 public interfacing events and travelled over three lakh kilometres across 25 states "to connect himself to the people everywhere" ahead of the 2014 polls.

According to PTI, the source said that BJP chief Amit Shah and senior leaders Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari will address 50 rallies each ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

All the rallies have been planned to prepare the ground for the party's campaign. Each rally is being designed so that it covers two to three Lok Sabha constituencies, the source added.

Before the election dates of the Lok Sabha elections are announced, the BJP will already have covered at least 400 Lok Sabha constituencies by organising 200 rallies, a party leader said.

Besides these 50 rallies, Modi will also address rallies in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where elections are scheduled later this year, the party leader said.

Wednesday's rally in Malout in Punjab was first of these rallies. Another similar farmers gathering is being planned at Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh this month.

A party source said that the exercise has been planned to bring the organisation into election mode and prepare a platform for the BJP's campaign.

PM Modi says Grand Alliance is merely a Grand Race to be the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the proposed grand opposition alliance is merely a "grand race" by his rivals to be the prime minister and accused the Congress of working to discredit every institution due to its "culture of Emergency".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the proposed grand opposition alliance is merely a “grand race” by his rivals to be the prime minister and accused the Congress of working to discredit every institution due to its “culture of Emergency”. In a wide-ranging interview to Swarajya magazine, he also touched on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and security concerns about his safety, saying that being among people gives him a lot of strength as he was not a ‘Shahenshah’ who is unaffected by people’s warmth. Targeting opposition parties, he said they are driven by “personal survival and power politics” and they have no agenda except to remove him with “hatred for Modi” being their “sole gluing force”.

The Congress, he said, had graduated from “Modi hatred” to “India hatred”, accusing the opposition party of going on an overdrive to discredit every possible institution in the last seven to eight years. Expressing confidence that people will vote the BJP back to power in the next Lok Sabha elections, he said the Congress is fighting a battle for its survival (“astitva ki ladai”) and is now running from pillar to post looking for allies.

Ridiculing the Congress amid its efforts to stitch together an alliance against the BJP, he said the Rahul Gandhi-led party is now like a regional party and cannot become a cementing force or anchor for any combine of opposition parties.

The prime minister dubbed the next election a choice between governance and development on one side and chaos on the other as he cited the example of Karnataka, where the Congress-JD(S) alliance “stole the mandate” to form government with “development taking a back seat”.

“In any election, a non-ideological and opportunist coalition is the best guarantee for chaos,” he said, describing Karnataka as “a trailer of what is possibly in store”. You would expect ministers meeting each other to solve development issues but in Karnataka they meet only to quell infighting, he said. The BJP, he said, contests elections on the issues of development and good governance and the mandates it has received in state after state are historic.

“Hence, we are confident that people will repose their trust in us. They (opposition) have no agenda except to remove Modi. Hatred for Modi is the sole gluing force for the opposition,” he said. Modi rejected the comparison of an opposition alliance with a similar alliance of the then opposition in the 1977 and 1989 elections. While the common motive in 1977 was to protect democracy following the Emergency, the opposition joined hands 12 years later after the “record-breaking corruption” of Bofors had hurt the entire nation, he said.

“Today, these alliances are not motivated by national good but they are about personal survival and power politics. They have no agenda except to remove Modi,” he said. The entire focus in the opposition is on power politics with Rahul Gandhi saying he is ready to be prime minister while TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is also eying the top post but the Left has a “problem” with her, the prime minister said.

The Samajwadi Party, he added, thinks its leader more than anyone else deserves to be prime minister. He also rejected the criticism that freedom of expression and sanctity of institutions are shrinking under the BJP, saying it is absurd and incorrect and that it is not his party’s value system at all.

“In fact, some of our leaders, including sitting Cabinet ministers, ministers in various states, went to jail during the Emergency and withstood lathis. This shows how much we cherish democratic values and freedom. Hence, I find such a discourse about damage to institutions under the BJP absurd and incorrect. That is not our value
ystem at all,” he said. It is the Congress whose culture is the “culture of the Emergency”, he said.

Modi said Congress leaders “victimised” the then Army Chief and the CAG for not toeing their party’s line when it was in power. “In opposition, they mocked the Indian Army for the surgical strikes, they find fault with our other security forces. Now they also attack reputed rating agencies that are optimistic about India, they discredit the RBI… Now they are after the courts,” he said.

“Their onslaught on the election process of India is alarming. Instead of introspecting why in state after state people are rejecting them, the Congress is finding fault in the poll process. What can one say to such a thought process,” he asked. “Our institutions and our democracy are vibrant as always. India’s democratic ethos cannot be trampled over,” he asserted.

It is the Congress, he said, which that has subverted our democracy, judiciary and media time and again. Modi also praised the social media, saying it has made our discourse a lot more democratic. On Jammu and Kashmir, he said the Centre’s goal in the state is “good governance, development, responsibility and accountability”.

“Recurrent terror attacks” that were common under the UPA rule are now history, Modi asserted. The state has been under Governor’s rule since June 20. To a question on whether the BJP’s allies are on the same page with it and if the NDA is weaker today, Modi asserted that his party views the alliance not as a compulsion but as an article of faith.

BJP to Appoint Head for each 543 Lok Sabha Seat before 2019 LS Elections

This is for the first time that the BJP has appointed an in-charge for every Lok Sabha seat - a model that the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been following for years.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will appoint an in-charge for each of the 543 Lok Sabha segments and set up an 11-member committee in every state to start preparation for the next year’s parliamentary elections, two party leaders privy to the matter said.

These in-charge, or prabhari, will be from outside the Lok Sabha constituency which they will oversee, the first leader said. The 11-member panel will be called “Chunav Taiyari Toli” (election preparation group) and will look after 13 specific assignments related to the state, the second leader said.

This is for the first time that the BJP has appointed an in-charge for every Lok Sabha seat - a model that the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been following for years - and such a specific team has been deployed in each state to prepare the ground for Parliamentary elections, the two leaders said.

“We are getting ready for polls,” first leader said. “The earlier we start preparing, the better the understanding we will have of our strengths and weaknesses. The party intends to win in 2019 with a margin bigger than in 2014.”

“The Modi-Shah duo lay a great focus on organisational work,” the second leader said. “The entire exercise is to fine-tune the organisation for the next challenge.”

BJP president Amit Shah has begun a tour of all states, starting with Chhattisgarh on June 10, and plans to visit each state by the end of July to review the preparedness of each state unit for the general election.

The BJP faces a challenge in some of the states with opposition parties such as the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP in Uttar Pradesh and the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) coming together in Karnataka. The BJP intends to neutralise this threat by taking a first-mover advantage.

Each state unit has been asked to prepare a detailed report on relevant social issues, the political situation, the strategy of the opposition, the possibility of alliances, and the names of those who benefited from central schemes. The units have also been asked to check the backgrounds of those who intend to join the party in the coming months. These details need to be ready before Shah’s visits, the second leader said.

Apart from a prabhari, each parliamentary constituency will also get a three-member social media team, a three-member team to engage with the media, a legal team of three, and a two-member team for monitoring the implementation of central and state schemes, the first leader said.

During his visits to different states, Shah will hold brainstorming sessions with the 11-member poll team, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh parivar, full-time volunteers engaged in expansion work and with the person in charge of those Lok Sabha seats in a state that the BJP could not win last time.

Each general secretary of the party has been assigned specific states to follow up on after Shah’s visit is over, the second leader said.

Bengal BJP to Submit Lok Sabha Blueprint targeting 26 Seats to Amit Shah

KOLKATA: Buoyed by its performance in the rural polls, the West Bengal BJP unit is set to submit its Lok Sabha blueprint, targeting 26 parliamentary seats in the state, to party president Amit Shah during his visit to the state this week.

Shah is scheduled to arrive in West Bengal on a two-day visit from June 27 during which he is expected to hold deliberations on the BJP's political strategy with leaders of the state, where the saffron party is toiling hard to improve its tally in the upcoming general elections.

The BJP president had set the target of winning 22 seats out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal.

The party presently has two Lok Sabha seats -- Asansol and Darjeeling -- in the state.

"We will submit our complete report to Amit Shah. He had given us a target of 22 seats, but if the elections are held in a fair manner, we are in a position to win at least 26 seats," BJP state president Dilip Ghosh told PTI.

"We will submit our strategy report to him and restructure it according to his instructions," he said.

Although the state leadership is elated over its performance in the recent panchayat polls, it is having a tough time in scouting for answers over its "inability" to constitute committees in more than 77,000 polling stations of the state and bring intellectuals on board for campaigns.

The 26 seats where the BJP's chances of winning is more than 60 to 70 per cent are spread across North Bengal, South Bengal and tribal-dominated districts of Junglemahal, said a senior BJP leader on condition of anonymity.

Some of seats which the BJP will be targeting in the next Lok Sabha polls are Balurghat, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Malda North in North Bengal and Purulia, Jhargram, Medinipur, Krishnagar, Howrah in South Bengal.

The state unit in its report has also mentioned about Asansol Lok Sabha seat that it had won the last time but showed apprehensiveness about the Darjeeling seat following the change in political equation in the Hills, where the present GJM leadership, under Binay Tamang, is more inclined towards ruling TMC, said the BJP leader.

According to Ghosh, the performance of BJP in the last month's panchayat polls despite ruling TMC's "reign of terror", has accelerated the ground-level political situation of the state.

The party has also appointed observers for each of the 42 Lok Sabha seats as well as the assembly seats in the state to strengthen the organisation at the booth level.

Be it tribal-dominated districts like Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura or districts in North Bengal such as Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur or Muslim-dominated Malda, the saffron party's performance in rural polls has cemented its position as the main opposition in the state by relegating the CPI(M) and the Congress to distant third and fourth positions respectively.

However, the gap between the ruling TMC and the surging BJP is still wide, if the overall rural polls and assembly bypoll results were to be taken into consideration.

According to the state leadership, Shah will also seek a report on the creation of committees at all booths, a target he had set during his visit in September last year.

"We have been able to reach out to 60-70 percent booths. Our primary objective is to take our organisation to all the booths of the state and strengthen it," BJP national general secretary and in-charge of Bengal, Kailash Vijayvergiya, told PTI.

Ghosh, however, claimed that after rural polls, the party has been able to cover 85 per cent booths in the state.

"We have not been able to reach out to all the booths, especially the minority-dominated districts of Malda, Murshidabad. We have a support base, but no one is ready to man the booth committees fearing backlash by the TMC. We hope things will change in the days to come," Ghosh said.

On the issue of roping in intellectuals, who act as catalysts in creating public opinion and has been a notable factor in decimating the 34-year-old Left Regime, the state unit is yet to taste considerable success.

The party's central leadership has stressed the need to rope in intellectuals and had asked the state unit to create an IT cell. Shah, during his visit, is scheduled to address a meet of intellectuals.

"We have met more than 500 intellectuals in the last few months but not many of them have come forward to join us. During the last two intellectuals' meet, we have not been able to rope anyone prominent. We hope things are different this time," said another BJP leader on the condition of anonymity.

Ghosh along with a senior BJP central leader had approached Samir Aich, an eminent painter, and requested him to attend the intellectuals meet.

AAP, Congress likely to Join Hands in Delhi ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Elections

NEW DELHI: As political parties are gearing up for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, another Congress-triggered alliance is taking its shape to counter Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Following the 'Mahagathbandhan' in Bihar assembly elections of 2015 and the recent Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance in Karnataka, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress are in talks of a coalition in Delhi.

Reports suggest that informal talks between the grand old party and AAP initiated on May 24, with Jairam Ramesh and Ajay Maken representing the former.

Reportedly, the AAP approached the Congress for the alliance, with an offer of a 5:2 ratio for seat sharing in Delhi - five seats for the AAP and two for the Congress.

The Congress party, however, demanded three out of the seven seats, which are - New Delhi for Sharmishtha Mukherjee, Chandni Chowk for Ajay Maken and North West Delhi for Rajkumar Chauhan.

The speculations about the rumoured alliance got a further boost after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Thursday praised former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Twitter.

Launching an attack on PM Modi, the AAP leader had said that people are missing an educated PM like Manmohan Singh. "People missing an educated PM like Dr Manmohan Singh," Kejriwal had tweeted.

It is worthy to note that Kejriwal had earlier been a strong critic of Manmohan Singh going as far as to say in 2013 that, "Manmohan failed to check corruption within Congress and his own government".

BJP's ever-expanding wings in the country have, however, now made once bitter foes, the best of friends.

PM Modi to Kickstart 2019 Lok Sabha Election Campaign with Unveiling of Statue of Unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kickstart the campaign for 2019 Lok Sabha elections with unveiling of the Statue of Unity in Gujarat on October 31.

At a height of 182 meters, the Statue of Unity will be the tallest statue in the world. The unveiling of the statue will coincide with the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

With less than a year left for the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is aggressively marketing itself as the party that works for 'Vikas' (development).

The launch of the statue is a decisive move by the party as it aims to reach out to the vast voter base as well as to appease the Patidar community. It is believed that the launch of the statue will also have a massive branding campaign.

Invites will be sent to chief ministers across the country and to the leaders of various SAARC countries. South eastern countries other than Pakistan will also be invited for the event.

Narendra Modi, as the chief minister of Gujarat, had laid the foundation stone of the Sardar Patel statue on October 31, 2013. Modi had invoked nation-wide farmers to contribute scraps of iron for the statue. About 135 tonnes of iron scraps were accumulated after Modi's appeal.

In January, about 70 per cent of the construction was completed. The remaining work is under speedy progress.

Despite Ire over Bullet Train, Tribals Stick to BJP ahead of 2019 General Elections

MUMBAI: Despite the tribal population of Palghar district being against the bullet train and Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, the BJP managed to garner votes from three of the four tribal dominated belts of Dahanu, Vikramgad and Palghar in the Lok Sabha constituency bypoll.

Both the Dahanu and Vikramgad assembly segments belong to the BJP. During campaigning, tribals from villages likely to be affected by the projects had lamented that the party had not come to them seeking their votes. The BJP overtook the Shiv Sena in vote share in the tribal pockets. The BJP got 49,181 votes in Dahanu, while their rival Sena got 38,778 votes. The CPM candidate Kiran Raja secured more votes than the Sena (42,517), despite the Sena promising to oppose the two projects.

Social activist and political observer Ramakant Patil said that those opposed to the projects voted for the Sena. The BJP got the Congress votes in the tribal pockets as their candidate Rajendra Gavit, was a Congressman till a month ago. Kaluram Pardhi, a tribal from Hanuman Nagar in Palghar, who is opposed to the projects said that the BJP did not campaign in the areas from where the bullet train and expressway is to pass.

In Boisar, where a large number of tribals are likely to be affected by the projects, the votes went to the Sena candidate Shrinivas Wanga. The Sena secured 49,991 votes in Boisar compared to BJP's 41,632 seats. Even the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) that has an MLA from Boisar had to settle with few seats (46,754).

In Palghar, despite it being a Sena stronghold went to the BJP (56,215 votes). Here too, said political observers the Congress votes were dropped into the BJP kitty. With Gavit ditching the Congress, the party had to settle for Damodar Shingada.

Political observers said that as it was prestige seat for the BJP, they focused on diverting every seat in their favour. "The BJP workers were going around the tribal belts and who ever could garner over 200 seats were being put in touch with the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis," said a political observer in Vikramgad. He said that even if the Sena had tied up with the CPM they could have defeated the BJP. The CPM got 71,887 votes.

Former Independent MLA from Vasai and once Sena sympathiser Vivek Pandit too went with the BJP. Infact, it was Pandit who had accompanied Gavit to meet Fadnavis. Political observers said that projecting Gavit as the BJP's face in the bypoll was Pandit's way of hoping for a assembly ticket in the next election. Pandit has a sizeable tribal following due to his NGO Shramajeevi Sanghatana but that could not translate into actual votes, said observers.

The urban population of Vasai-Virar voted for the BVA but also did not disappoint the BJP. Uddhav Thackeray's campaigning in Vasai did not translate into votes. The Sena got 27,265 votes in Nalasopara while the BJP got 37,623. The low voter turnout in Nalasopara (34.83%) despite having the maximum of 4.5 lakh voters cost the BVA. Nalasopara MLA Kshitij Thakur blamed the low turn out to the election being held on Monday, a working day.

Political observers said that despite the BJP win, they have come to realise that the Palghar LS seat is a Sena seat and any alliance with other parties can ensure its victory. Political observers said that Gavit's win does not ensure him a ticket in the 2019 LS polls. "If the BJP-Sena alliance happens, the ticket will go to the Sena. And will be the end of Gavit's political career," said a political observer.

Hits & Misses: 4 Years of Narendra Modi Government ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls

Numbers can often be strung together to tell a story. But when each number has a story of its own, it is best to let them do their own talking: a reading of how the economy may play out in the fifth year of the Narendra Modi government.

Most governments get into election mode in the last year of its term. Narendra Modi’s government is different. The current dispensation has remained almost permanently in election mode, with the Prime Minister personally being involved in many state elections, with BJP often fighting these in Modi’s name, often without declaring a chief ministerial candidate.

Therefore, electoral signals have been spread out across the last four years of the government and mixed with economic reforms. The fifth year is not expected to be any different. No one really expects the government to be cautious either and expects it to pull out a few more rabbits out of the bag this year, too.

The key fact that has the government enthused is that India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world, and is likely to emerge as the fifth largest. The economy is expected to double in seven years. This is a good proposition for any government to work with, be it in its last year or the first.

6 Big Changes That Defined 4 Years of Modi:

Demonetisation
On November 8, 2016, the government announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in circulation would be withdrawn and new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes were issued. The move was reportedly aimed at targeting black money, though that narrative did change over the course of the year. The move sent shockwaves across the economy. Economic growth was subdued and several small businesses were shut. Some still argue that the economy is yet to recuperate from that shock. The currency in circulation has now steadily grown, and the government is pumping in new currency notes Currency with public on May 11, 2018 Rs 18,578 billion Currency with public on October 17, 2016 (before note ban) Rs 17,564 billion.

Unified Tax
India has been looking at a unified goods and services tax (GST) regime for almost two decades. The Modi government took it upon itself to push through the indirect taxes reform. The GST has more tax slabs that envisioned and has been revised multiple times. The small and medium businesses have complained that compliance has gone up while margins have come down. Teething troubles are still being ironed out.

Ease of Doing Business
One of the key parameters that the government wanted to improve was ease of doing business. Modi had made it clear that India’s ranking on the World Bank chart should improve. After slipping briefly, India managed to go up 30 places in the 2018 rankings.

Thinking Out of the Box
This government has tried to radically change how governance works in India. A look at some of those moves:

Demonetisation and GST are among the most radical moves.

The Budget date was changed to February 1. The advancement from the last day of the month was to ensure departments get more time to spend the money allocated to them.

The Railway Budget, an annual event of great political opportunism, was done away with. The portfolio was used as a bargaining chip in coalition politics.

Planning Commission was replaced with NITI Aayog - Conflicting ministries were brought under one minister like steel and mines or coal and power.

Process started for privatisation of Air India - The insolvency and bankruptcy code implemented in 2016 laid out the rules for a court-monitored time-bound process of dealing with bad loans. This has led to Rs 4 lakh crore worth of recoveries.

Expanding Political Base
Politically, BJP has expanded its footprint across India during the past four years. It had a government in seven states in May 2014 — the Modi government was sworn in on May 26. Today, it either heads the government or is part of the ruling coalition in 22 states. Major electoral gains include Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Tripura. It also emerged as the single largest party in the recent Karnataka polls but fell short of getting the numbers to form a government.

BS Yeddyurappa back in Action ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls

BENGALURU: A day after he resigned as chief minister, state BJP president B S Yeddyurappa was back in action on Sunday, returning to the party headquarters and engaging in confabulations to prepare the party apparatus for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The state BJP chief has called for a meeting of all defeated BJP candidates in Bengaluru on Wednesday. "All sitting MLAs and defeated candidates of BJP will attend the meeting where we will discuss what went wrong in the constituencies we lost and try to fix problems, if any, keeping 2019 Lok Sabha elections in mind," Yeddyurappa told mediapersons on Sunday.

The BJP lost around 10 seats with less than 2,000 votes in the recent polls.

By convening the meeting, Yeddyurappa is seeking to send out a message that he is not perturbed by the party's loss in the number game and infuse confidence in the party's cadres. During his emotional speech in the assembly before he resigned, the BJP leader had vowed that he won't sit at home but tour the state to prepare the party for 2019 elections.

Yeddyurappa's residence in Dollars Colony, which was abuzz with activities ever since the BJP emerged the single-largest party last week, wore a deserted look on Sunday with no visitors, barring a few leaders like Malikayya Guttedar and BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan calling on the outgoing CM. The police force deployed near Yeddyurappa's house too had been withdrawn soon after his resignation.

Later, Yeddyurappa went to the state BJP office and held talks with the city leaders about the Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Jayanagar polls to be held on May 28 and June 11, respectively. Election in RR Nagar was deferred after over 9,000 EPICs were found in a flat in Jalahalli just five days before polls. Election to Jayanagar constituency was countermanded following the death of BJP candidate B N Vijayakumar.

Yeddyurappa, in all likelihood, will play the victim card ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to consolidate Lingayat support, along with STs under the leadership of B Sreeramulu as he did in 2008 when Kumaraswamy refused to hand over power as per the pact between the JD(S) and BJP.

PM Modi to Visit Russia on 21-May for Informal Summit with Putin

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia on 21 May for an informal summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, an Indian foreign ministry statement said Monday.

The sudden visit is part of the “tradition of regular consultations between India and Russia at the highest levels,” the statement added.

A person familiar with the development declining to be named said this was not the regular annual summit between Indian and Russian leaders which takes place every year alternately in India and Russia. Modi had travelled to Russia last June and Putin is expected to visit India in October.

“Given today’s geo-political situation, it is a very, very good idea to reaffirm the India-Russia strategic partnership and hold consultations on how to react to situations, find commonality in views,” said P.S. Raghavan, a former Indian ambassador to Russia.

“We (India-Russia) need to rescue the strategic partnership from perceptions of deterioration,” he said.

“Today in some ways, the US-Russia relationship is in some ways worse than the Cold War days where there are tensions over Ukraine, Syria to Afghanistan,” Raghavan said.

According to the Indian statement, the summit is taking place at the invitation of Putin. Modi will visit Russia on 21 May for an informal Summit with President Putin in the city of Sochi, the statement said.

“This will be an important occasion for the two leaders to exchange views on international matters in a broad and long-term perspective with the objective of further strengthening our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” it said adding, “both leaders will also discuss their respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters.”

The Modi-Putin summit follows another informal summit between Modi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Wuhan last month. The Modi-Putin summit comes amid a great deal of flux in the global order as well as at a time when India-Russia ties are seen as lacking the warmth they used to have -- raising speculation that the summit could aim at a possible reset in ties between India and Russia.

Russia’s seemingly cooling relations with India as well as a simultaneous warming of ties with Pakistan has been an issue raised by the opposition in India.

On the international front, the Modi-Putin summit comes after the US last week pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that is being backed by Europe, China and Russia, raising the spectre of higher oil prices and an uncertain future for foreign companies investing in Iran.

The Trump administration has indicated that it is willing to impose sanctions on European companies that do business in Iran. On the other hand, US President Donald Trump is to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on 12 June.

Ties between China and the US are also strained over what the US calls unequal trade between the two countries.

There is already tension between the US and Russia over the latter’s alleged interference in the 2016 US elections that brought Trump to power. These have been exacerbated by the alleged Russian hand in the poisoning of a former Russian intelligence official Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Britain’s Salisbury town in March. The US and Europe in March expelled scores of Russian diplomats, a move that Moscow reciprocated.

In this context, the India-Russia summit “is a very good idea,” Raghavan said.

4 Years of Modi Government: An Online Survey by Local Circles Social Media Platform

New Delhi: Narendra Modi’s BJP-led central government has received a pat on its back as it gets set to celebrate four years in power this month and enter the election year.

In an online survey conducted by LocalCircles, 57 per cent of respondents have said that the NDA government has either met or exceeded their expectations.

However, this also means that the other 43 per cent of people are dissatisfied with the government, a number which has risen in the last couple of years. The corresponding figures in 2016 and 2017 were 36 per cent and 39 per cent respectively.

The percentage of respondents who feel the government has exceeded their expectations has risen from 17 to 28, while the number of those who feel the government has merely ‘met’ their expectations has dropped from 44 per cent to 29 per cent.

The BJP alone had won 282 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, on the back of ambitious promises made by Modi.

Survey Sample Size:

LocalCircles is a social media platform launched in 2013, where citizens of an area can come together on issues of governance and shared interests, as well as flag common concerns to the administration. For this, users of the platform, who have to sign up and interact under their real names, become members of their ‘local circle’.

The latest online survey gives a picture of the government’s performance in 23 different areas or parameters. “These parameters are based on promises made by the government in its manifesto or issues identified by citizens on LocalCircles’ platform,” the social media platform stated.

“This year’s survey received more than 1,75,000 votes from approximately 62,000 citizens in 250 districts of India, and is the largest exercise of its kind, where citizens assess government performance.”

Parameters:

The BJP government has drawn flak for the hardship and economic distress caused due to the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in November 2016, and then the roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax in July 2017. Job generation has also been repeatedly mentioned as a problem, as has the slowdown in the growth of the economy.

Yet, 56 per cent of the respondents believe the “government is on track to deliver the promises made in the pre-election manifesto”, a slight dip from 59 per cent in last year’s survey. Given the lofty promises the BJP had made, a 56 per cent positive figure on this parameter may not disappoint it too much.

In some other key parameters, the feedback for the Modi government is mixed. Around 32 per cent citizens feel that crime against women and children have reduced in the last four years, while 58 per cent feel it has not (the other 10 per cent responded ‘can’t say’).

Around 60 per cent of those who participated in the survey said that prices of essential commodities and the cost of living have not reduced.

Only around 35 per cent believe that the unemployment rate has reduced in the last four years, while 54 per cent say it hasn’t.

A key flagship initiative of this government – the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan – seems to be gaining popularity. Last year, 35 per cent had said that they find their city cleaner due to Swachh Bharat. This year, the figure has gone up to 43 per cent.

Modi fought the 2014 election, and continues to do so in the states, on an anti-corruption plank, while targeting the Congress for being highly corrupt. However, in terms of public perception, it’s pretty neck-and-neck – 49 per cent of people believe corruption has reduced, while 44 per cent say it hasn’t.

The surgical strikes of 2016 against Pakistan and its handling of the Doklam crisis with China seem to have earned the BJP government brownie points, as has Modi’s foreign policy.

On the question of whether India’s image and influence in the world has improved, 82 per cent said yes while 13 per cent said no. On the government’s handling of the conflict on the borders and relations with Pakistan in the last four years, an overwhelming 74 per cent felt things had improved, while 24 per cent stated otherwise.

The approval ratings for the government’s Pakistan policy was just 34 per cent in 2016, but has gone up dramatically to 64 per cent, a possible reaction to the surgical strikes. When asked if acts of terror have reduced in the last four years, 61 per cent citizens said yes, while 35 per cent said no.

BJP Will Look East for 2019 Lok Sabha Election to Make up for Shortfall in Other States

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told News18 Network that the BJP can gain in Odisha, West Bengal and other states where it did not win many seats in 2014.

New Delhi: The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) would be looking at the East as a fertile catchment area in the next Lok Sabha polls to make up for the short-fall in states where it has already peaked.

"We can gain in Odisha, West Bengal, those states from where we did not win many seats," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told News18 Network on being asked to comment on BJP's plans for the upcoming elections, especially in states the party registered very high strike rate in the last Lok Sabha polls.

The BJP won more than 250 of the 300 Lok Sabha seats up for grabs in north, west and central India with a strike rake of almost 90% to form the first single-party majority government in India since 1984.

However, there have been concerns in the BJP after the recent Rajasthan by-polls and Gujarat Assembly elections regarding the party’s prospects in states where local anti-incumbency may impinge on the General Elections 2019.

So, West Bengal and Odisha which together send 63 MPs to the Lok Sabha are being seen as virgin territory where the party is making renewed attempt to increase political and electoral footprint to mop up numbers in 2019.

In both the states, the BJP has emerged as the main opposition to the ruling dispensation. Both states are governed by regional parties where the BJP is not facing political constrains due to the presence of a dominant NDA ally as in the case of Andhra Pradesh.

The BJP also sees a scope to improve its tally in the north-eastern states which together elect 25 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

"In the north-east our party is gaining momentum. Modiji has presented a corruption-free government and the kind of governance our party has given, I am sure we will win the next LS elections of the basis of our performance," Jaitley told News18 Network.

The BJP and its allies now have 14 MPs from the region. Party preparations in seven NE states are being led by Assam Minister for Education and Health Himanta Biswa Sarma.

ABP News-Lokniti-CSDS Prediction on Modi Government Another Term

A survey has found that in the event of a Lok Sabha election in the country today, BJP-led NDA may get a total of 293-309 seats. This is 30 seats less than what NDA won in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi-led government continues to ride high on its popularity, even as the recent Gujarat election results jolted some nerves in the party.

If parliamentary polls were held now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would easily secure another term although anti-incumbency is slowly catching up with him, a survey by ABP News-Lokniti-CSDS has predicted.

The survey has found that in the event of a Lok Sabha election in the country today, BJP-led NDA may get a total of 293-309 seats. This is 30 seats less than what NDA won in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

If NDA loses 30 seats out of 336 it won in 2014 elections, it means BJP may finish short of the majority mark of 272. In 2014 BJP won 282 seats, leading the NDA, which in total got 336 seats.

The mood-of-the-nation survey also shows a steady rise in the United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) seat tally and the Congress's vote share.

In May 2017, a similar survey had predicted 331 seats for the BJP-led NDA alliance.

The slight dip in the BJP’s popularity seems to be benefitting the Congress party the most. According to the survey, UPA can get 127 seats and Others 115.

The survey says the Congress now has a 25 per cent vote share - up 4 points from May 2017 and 6 points from the 19 per cent it had tallied in 2014 general election. Its allies are projected to secure 5 per cent of the votes, a slight dip since May 2017’s survey.

Prime Minister Modi’s own personal popularity has also declined in the last eight months, although he continues to be the most popular leader by quite a distance. In May 2017, 44% of the voters had wanted him to return as prime minister in the event of a snap election. Now, the same figure is down by 7 percentage points to 37%.

The survey also shows that Rahul Gandhi’s popularity has gone up. Around 48% of respondents agree that Rahul Gandhi is competent to be the prime minister of the country. This is an 8% increase from the March 2014 pre-poll survey by Lokniti before the Lok Sabha elections that had found 40% of the respondents wanting Rahul Gandhi to be the prime minister.

The survey also concluded complete dissatisfaction with BJP government’s work is now at its highest in the last three years. 17% of respondents were fully dissatisfied with the BJP government; while 23% of the respondents were somewhat dissatisfied from the government, according to the survey. This is an increase from the 2017 survey when the numbers were at 15% and 12% respectively.

This dissatisfaction with Modi government’s performance has increased across all the regions.

The survey was conducted between January 7 and 20 across 175 parliamentary seats in 19 states. Of the 14,336 respondents, 51 per cent expressed satisfaction with the government's performance while 41 per cent said they were dissatisfied. In May 2017, 64 per cent were satisfied with the government's performance.

Republic TV National Approval Ratings: Why Narendra Modi's Popularity still Remains Intact?

Republic TV's national approval ratings conducted with the help of C Voter show that Narendra Modi is clearly ahead as most popular Prime Minister at 62.7 per cent.

Rahul Gandhi stands at the second position with 12.6 per cent followed by Sonia Gandhi (4.4 per cent), Manmohan Singh (4.3 per cent), Arvind Kejriwal (1.6 per cent), Nitish Kumar (1.5 per cent). When only two options were given for Prime Ministerial choice, 66 per cent people chose Narendra Modi, 28 per cent chose Rahul Gandhi and the remaining 6 per cent chose none.

Narendra Modi has definitely delivered some positives such as strong leadership to the nation. He is also a hard working Prime Minister, brave enough to take strong decisions and his government remained reasonably honest or say scam free till date. He has also implemented a lot of public benefiting programmes. Not only India, but the world also sees him as a no-nonsense leader who is honestly working for the upliftment of the nation.

However, there have been failures too. Although his government took stringent steps like demonetisation to curb black money, but still not many black money hoarders have been booked yet. Corruption still remains deeply rooted within the bureaucracy. The economy's health is not good at the moment although it is likely to improve. Many experts think that Arun Jaitley should be sacked from the finance ministry because he is not capable of managing the economy.

An eye catching failure is with the agrarian sector. Despite electoral promises, Narendra Modi-led government till date has failed in uplifting the distressed farmers. Even the electoral promise of providing MSP (50 per cent of input cost) to agricultural produce has not been fulfilled. The government has also failed in generating employment opportunities. India's GDP is mostly dependant on the service sector and service sector is never known for employment generation. Another reason of unemployment is lack of skill among the educated youth.

Although the MUDRA scheme did partly succeeded in generating employment but that success remains insignificant as more and more unemployed youth join the existing population each year. 'Make in India' is yet to kick start. Big ticket reforms in social sector are yet to take place. Other social parameters that remain unchanged are health, connectivity, primary education (rural), tribal welfare etc.

If we expect that Narendra Modi will make India developed in just five years then we are in living in a fool's paradise. It requires much more time. The only consolation is that Narendra Modi has intent and is doing hard work to achieve significant growth in all indexes.

In a democracy, the government should always be criticised for its failures despite the intent and hard work. Criticism should always be ruthless one. However, one should understand that criticism shouldn't cross the thin line and turn into cynicism. And I feel that's the root cause of Modi's popularity.

The opposition in India blames Narendra Modi for all and sundry under the Sun. Their criticism has in fact become cynical which the public understands. That's why when there's a genuine criticism of his failure, people consider it as routine cynicism by the opposition.

Let's look the above popularity figures once again. There was a time when Arvind Kejriwal was ranked above Rahul Gandhi in popularity for the Prime Minister's post. Now he is trailing with just 1.6 per cent. It's because he over indulged in opposing for just opposition sake. That's why he lost both popularity and credibility.

The closest rival of Narendra Modi in popularity was Nitish Kumar. Had the Congress named Nitish Kumar as the Prime Ministerial candidate by 2015, I think Narendra Modi would have been facing huge competition by now. But despite Nitish Kumar's popularity he had no organisation outside Bihar and even in Bihar his organisation's strength is at number 3. Thus he found it better to join Narendra Modi for his longer political success as Bihar leader.

Thus, in conclusion, a popular leader can remain popular despite some glaring failures in the absence of a credible alternative. I think that's the reason why Narendra Modi still maintains his popularity.

BJP Planning Mahayagya at Red Fort to Win 2019 Lok Sabha Elections

No Alliance Between SP-Congress for 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, says Akhilesh

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has finally ruled out his party’s alliance with the Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, citing poor outcome of the two parties’ tie-up during last year’s Assembly elections.

Addressing a party meeting here on Tuesday, Akhilesh Yadav said that there was no possibility of an alliance in the Lok Sabha elections and his priority was to strengthen the Samajwadi Party.

“Had the alliance been in force, the Congress would have contested the municipal polls with us,” he said, pointing to the poor performance of the alliance in the Assembly elections in which the BJP wrested power from the SP.

“My friendship with Rahul Gandhi remains, but it is now time to strengthen the SP. We are on good terms with Rahul Gandhi but we definitely do not have any alliance for the polls, as of now,” he told reporters.

The SP had won 21 Lok Sabha seats in 2009 but after Akhilesh Yadav became Uttar Pradesh chief minister the party’s tally came down to five seats in the 2014 parliamentary polls.

The SP-Congress alliance in the 2017 state elections had come a cropper with the SP left with 47 seats while the Congress won just seven seats in the 403-member Assembly.

The Congress, on the other hand, has been squarely blaming the alliance with SP for its worst ever performance in state elections when it almost got decimated.

Though none of the party spokespersons was ready to comment officially on the SP’s decision not dump the grand old party ahead of the 2019 polls, senior leaders said that it was a “happy development”.

“We are on a comeback trail and today’s development is a burden off our back. We can now move ahead with confidence under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership,” said a veteran leader.

Earlier, Akhilesh Yadav hinted at an early start by the SP in picking candidates for the Lok Sabha polls.
